spam and unsubscribed users

In the last day or so we got a few pieces of spam on the user's and
devel list, mostly relating to someone promoting a penny stock. I
changed to mail preferences to subscribe only, to block these
spammers. I have received some email off-list from someone who reads
the list through a mail to news gateway who cannot post this way w/o
subscribing.

Is anyone aware of a solution which would allow the
mail-to-news-gateway folks to still post while blocking the
unsubscribed spammers? Presumably not....

We could revert to the old settings depending on how many people are
inconvenienced by the subscription only requirement -- I don't feel
strongly either way, but I would like to keep spam to a minimum. Some
lists I used to read (eg GNU lists) are mostly unreadable now due to
the deluge of spam they receive.

If this is simply a convenience issue (they want to post from the newsreader, but could use email if they had to) I'd say it's a clear choice, still limit it to members. Is there any reason they can't email directly to the list? (seems unlikely to me) The spam will make the list much less useful, and keep lots of people who could use it from bothering.

I would think there are very few lists you can post to without
subscribing, because of the spam problems.
