I have added examples/multi_image.py to svn in response to Marcel Oliver's question. In the process, I found and fixed a bug in the new colorbar (also only in svn); now the ticks are labelled with the order of magnitude when the colors are mapped to very small or very large numbers, in the same way as they are for any other axes object.
