mathtext ps/eps backend on Mac Os X

I am having the same problem as reported by Serge Barrel on 2004-07-16.
Mathtext works fine on the GUI and e.g. PNG format, but the PS and EPS backend
brings out the raw LaTeX string.

I am using matplotlib 0.60.2 on Mac Os X 10.3.4.

Any ideas how to fix the problem?

Yes. Use the updated files in CVS. Or use the two attached python files.
