legend with item listed horizontally

Is there a way to specify that a legend show its items
horizontally instead of vertically, i.e.:

x-x-x-x label1 y-y-y-y label2 z-z-z-z label3

vs.

x-x-x-x label1
y-y-y-y label2
z-z-z-z label3

?
