I was able to reproduce your problem on one of our Pentium III computers and traced it down to a bug in the _path module initialization function (will file a separate bug report). Please try again installing the updated <matplotlib-0.99.1.1.win32-py2.6.exe> from <http://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/#matplotlib>.
