Unable to build matplotlib on PPC

I am running ubuntu but not on a PPC. You may need the gcc 3.4 and
g++3.4 compatability packages (and that may not be it - but it is easy
to try).

I think there is an issue with gcc-4.0. I could not compile matplotlib with gcc-4 on my iMac with Tiger Mac OSX. Using gcc-3.3 resolved the issues and all the backends compiled properly (matplotlib version 0.84).
