Has anybody considered writing a epix backend using pyepix? (http://claymore.engineer.gvsu.edu/~steriana/Python/pyepix/index.html).
A cursory inspection shows that it might solve many of the problems with mathematical typesetting that the psfrag backend was invented to solve.
