The pdf file
of the documentation seems not to have been run through the latex compliation process enough times. This is a guess based on the fact that the “Contents” section is empty, several references are just given as “[?]” and all pages in the module index are “??”. The pdf file would be more useful if this could be fixed.
That does sound like a bug. We defer to sphinx build for managing that, this issue should probably be reported upstream to them.
In the meantime I will try running the make command multiple times to see if that solves the problem.
I just noticed that there is an open PR improving the pdf build (https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/pull/15797) that may also address this issue.
Perhaps, but none of the issues I mention seem to be discussed there
