I want to get involved in contributing to matplotlib and have been looking for potential issues to take up but many of the issues with the “Good First Issue” tag are either documentation related or are very old. Does anyone have any recommendations for issues to take up as a beginner, ideally not documentation related?

The tags on github are our current best estimation of “good first issues”. We tend to make documentation issues because it is possible to get through the git / github / review process (which is daunting in and of itself) without also brining in API discussions.
As to old, we would love it if people looked at old issues either report that they have been subsequently fixed (because they were an unidentified duplicate) or if they still reproduce. If they still reproduce, and old bug squashed is still a bug squashed
