We are experimenting with gitter to see if it is useful to us:

The main benefit of this tool that it provides a public, quasi-readable,
high-bandwidth communication tool to move conversations out of private
gchat threads.
IPython uses gitter quite heavily and seems very happy with it. One thing
they learned is that if any major decisions are made on gitter, a summary
of the discussion and the decision needs to be written up and sent to the
mailing list.
