Matplotlib doesn't know about blas directly, as far as I know, so my guess is that the error is actually coming from an attempt to import numpy.
Can you import and run numpy on the system in question?
Based on your link below, I suspect it is indeed a KVM problem; the error message suggests that GotoBLAS is trying to configure itself based on the architecture it is running on. Maybe the KVM VM is not identifying itself in a way that GotoBLAS recognizes.
