Contour/Surface Plot

Hi,

Can MatPlotLib create a graph similar to the attached GnuPlot graph?

I have used contour before, .. but would like to also get the surface projection, .. above the contour

I'd prefer to use just the one plotting library for my work, not keen to install yet another plotting library.

That is a 3D plot, and matplotlib is fundamentally 2D. Some 3D plotting ability has been added, but it is mostly unmaintained and incomplete.
