buttons in toolbar2

Dear all,

I have had a quick look at changing the buttons in toolbar2. This seems to be backend dependent. It would be really nice to make it possible to add buttons to the toolbar and be backend agnostic. The button should have a picture and a hovertext associated with it. Is it very hard to include this in the next release of matplotlib?

Cheers

This has been on the wish list for quite a while, but it is not a small job. I am not aware that anyone has tackled it.

I would love to see this work done, if for no other reason than removing a lot of duplicate code.
