Many thanks to Paulo Meira for his modifications to wxmpl.py to make it compatible with matplotlib-0.98.3. However, I had to make one change to his file for it to work with my application. Also, I had to modify one line in matplotlib/backends/backend_wx.py. I'm not sure why I had to make these changes--maybe I'm doing something wrong in my python/wx/wxmpl/matplotlib application. Anyway, here are patches that illustrate the changes I had to make. The patches are attached, but I'm not sure how this list handles patches, so the text is also pasted below. I hope this helps someone...if I'm doing something wrong, suggestions will be appreciated.
